Soneto I
Sonnet I
Soñando desde mi torre en el aire
Dreaming from my tower in the air
Más alto que los árboles que rodean cerca
Higher than the trees surrounding close
Preguntándome si los hombres me encontrarían justo
Wondering if men would find me fair,
Los pasos abajo rompen mi reposo
Footsteps down below break my repose
La niebla alrededor de mi ventana me obstaculiza
The mist about my window hinders me
De ver quién entraría en mi corte
From viewing who would enter in my court
Pero tan pocos visitantes que la oportunidad de ver
But so few visitors I chance to see,
Intento que estoy en hacer mi informe
Intent I am on making my report
Y afinando mi dulce canción hacia la tierra
And tuning my sweet song towards the earth,
Cambiaré mi destino, que me dejó aquí desde que nací
I'll change my fate, which left me here since birth.

Soneto II
Sonnet II
Seis notas sólo había sonado cuando
Six notes only had I sounded when
Los pasos se acercaron más a mi muro de prisión
The footsteps came nearer my prison wall
Temblaba yo, sin embargo, sonaba de nuevo
Trembled I, yet sounded them again
Y de lo que parecía el pozo de la tierra oyó llamar
And from what seemed the pit of earth heard call
Una voz muy diferente a la que había oído
A voice quite different from those I had heard
Aunque podría contar ese número por una mano
Though I could count that number on one hand
Mis labios están demasiado secos para hablar una sola palabra
My lips too dry to speak a single word,
Me preguntaba por qué no había planeado mejor
I wondered why I had not better planned
Y trató en vano de dar un paso atrás desde el alféizar
And tried in vain to step back from the sill
Porque algo me sostenía el pelo y me mantenía quieto
For something held my hair and kept me still.

Soneto III
Sonnet III
Traté de gritar pero sonido que no podía hacer
I tried to scream but sound I could not make
Mi espantado ingenio me había robado mi discurso
My frightened wit had robbed me of my speech
Pensé en cómo podría romperme mis trenzas
I thought of how my tresses I might break,
Pero espié las tijeras más allá de mi alcance
But spied the scissors just beyond my reach
Frenéticamente me metí a través de mis faldas
Frantically I fumbled through my skirts,
Buscando mi daga en el redil
Searching for my dagger in the fold
Lo mismo que usé para rasgar camisas de lino
The same I used for tearing linen shirts
Y como no sabía lo que tenía retenido
And as I knew not what of me had hold,
Sacrificar mis trenzas levanté mi cuchillo
To sacrifice my braids I raised my knife
¡Demasiado tarde! Ahora debo matar para salvar mi vida
Too late! I now must kill to save my life.

Soneto IV
Sonnet IV
Mi punto dirigido a la barbilla del forasto
My point directed at the stranger's chin,
No quedaba tiempo para cortar su cuerda
No time was left for severing his rope
¿Pero debo matarlo o dejarlo entrar?
But shall I murder him or let him in?
Estaba demasiado aturdido por lo que vi para esperar
I was too stunned at what I saw to hope
Por alguna salvación. Sabía que estaba perdido
For some salvation. I knew I was lost
Cualquiera que fuera mi elección, no importaba
Whichever was my choice it mattered not
La niebla se había despejado, mi inocencia el costo
The mist had cleared, my innocence the cost
Y por un momento sin fin me forjé
And for one endless moment I was wrought
De carne humana y preocupaciones y miedos humanos
Of human flesh and human cares and fears
La fantasía de las fábulas leídas durante años
The fantasy of fables read for years.

Soneto V
Sonnet V
Una cara que era, sí, tenía labios y ojos
A face it was, yea, had it lips and eyes,
Pero a diferencia de lo que me saluda en el vaso
But unlike that which greets me in the glass
En sus esferas gemelas no vi menos sorpresa
In its twin orbs I saw no less surprise
Y así nos pusimos de pie, dos estatuas hechas de bronce
And so we stood, two statues made of brass
Yo miraba en sus ojos y él en los míos
I gazing in his eyes and he in mine
Como si hubiéramos leído el pensamiento del otro
As though we might have read each other's thought
Sonrió lentamente como un borracho con vino
sHe smiled slowly as one drunk with wine

When suddenly the forest rang with shots
Los cazadores de antes' se habían acercado demasiado
The hunters oft' before had come too near,
Así que me despido de todo mi miedo
And so I bid adieu to all my fear.

Soneto VI
Sonnet VI
Apenas sé la mitad de lo que hice
Hardly knowing half of what I did
Pero consciente de que la mitad que sabía estaba loca
But well aware the half I knew was mad,
Agarré sus brazos como la virtud puede prohibirlo
I grasped his arms as virtue may forbid
Y tiró a la criatura con la fuerza que tenía
And pulled the creature with what strength I had
A la cámara. Al suelo nos estrellamos
Into the chamber. To the floor we fell,
Entonces revuelto a mi poni recuperar
Then scrambled I to my poniard retrieve
Y le pidió ahora, en la tercera puerta de la muerte que dijera
And asked him now, at death's third door to tell
¿Por qué lo hizo de aquí, y le dijo que no engañara?
Why cam'st he hence, and bade him not deceive
Porque si fuera falso, a pesar de su belleza
For if he should be false, despite his beauty,
Aunque me engañaron, mi daga conocía su deber
Though I be fooled, my dagger knew its duty.

Soneto VII
Sonnet VII
Sus labios se movieron, pero no se oyó un sonido
His lips then moved but not a sound was heard
Los vi como dos pétalos de una rosa
I saw them as two petals from a rose
Cuando finalmente estaba en condiciones de decir una palabra
When finally he was fit to say a word,
Me contentaba con examinar su nariz
I was content examining his nose
Hizo alguna mención de la canción de un pájaro cantor
He made some mention of a songbird's tune
No estaba escuchando, pero miró su frente
I was not listening but o'erlooked his brow
Dijo que habría subido a la luna
He claimed he would have climbed up to the moon
Deseaba darle paz, pero no sabía cómo
I wished to give him peace but knew not how
No había pensado que su cuerda era un pelo de doncella
He had not thought his rope a maiden's hair
¡Sobre mi vida, encontré a la criatura justa!
Upon my life, I found the creature fair!

Soneto VIII
Sonnet VIII
El acto explicó, me rogó mi nombre
The deed explained, he begged of me my name
Rapunzel», respondí. «¿Eres un hombre?
"Rapunzel" I replied. "A man thou art?"

"I am" the creature laughed, "The very same
¿Cuánto tiempo has estado apartado de la vida?
How long hast thou been kept from life apart?"

I told him how, for one and twenty years,

My home had been the walls he saw around me
Cómo no hay cantidad de súplicas, ni lágrimas
How no amount of pleading, nor no tears
He ganado un visitante hasta que me encontró
Have gained a visitor until he found me
Pero cuando pienso en ello, recuerdo
But when I think upon it I recall,
Por mirar fijamente, no me escuchó en absoluto
For staring, he did not hear me at all.

Soneto IX
Sonnet IX
Me pareció que podríamos no hablar
It seemed to me we may as well not speak
Sus ojos se habían vuelto tan nublados como el día
His eyes had gone as cloudy as the day
Preguntó si podría volver esa semana
He asked if he might come again that week
Y sabía que pronto se había ido
And I knew he must soon be gone away
Tomó mis manos y las presionó en las suyas
He took my hands and pressed them in his own
Como si al hacerlo, se quedara más tiempo
As if by doing so he should stay longer
Me habló del mundo que podría haber conocido
He told me of the world I might have known,
Prometiendo regresar y matar a mi malhechor
Vowing to return and slay my wronger
Entonces prometiendo ningún daño, su cabeza se inclinó
Then promising no harm, his head he bent
Y besó mis labios, y luego salió por el alféizar
And kissed my lips, then out the sill he went.

Sonnet X
Bajándose a sí mismo como había llegado
Lowering himself as he had come,
A través de la niebla mi criatura desapareció
Through the mist my creature disappeared,

Riding back to all that he was from

And all that I could never be I feared

And yet what raven locks fell round his face

What gentle eyes as gray as seagulls wings

A voice so soft my words cannot replace

The memory of a thousand lovely things
Y así voy a soñar de nuevo con brazos más dulces
And so I'll dream again of arms more sweet
La daga que había tirado yace a mis pies
The dagger I had dropped lies at my feet.
